Season review

I've been asked when I would be posting our annual LIWSA season review. It is a bit premature to do so as the regular season make up games are underway and cup play begins in a weeks time.

Looking at the www.liwsa.com web site division standings page shows some great results from www.lakehillsoccer.com teams with D2 and D3 topping the charts, while Prem and D1 both finishing near the top of their tables!

The D3Ws surpassed their previous season point tally on the strength of stellar goalkeeping and an awesome defensive core. This season has not been without some challenges and a number of our opponents have given us stiff opposition. It should come as no surprise to see Bays-JL nipping on our heals, they are the only team that defeated Lakehill D3W this season. Bays-JL has the leagues best snipper in the form of SW, when she is on her game they are are unbeatable. Other teams showed great improvement over previous seasons, in particular Ladysmith and Gorge. VicWest with all their experience scored the nicest goal against us coming off of a well taken corner served up to a brilliant header that our stand-in keeper at Brodeur field could not be faulted on! Newcomers JDF did better than any other JDF team in this division over the last 4 seasons while fellow newcomers SFFC struggled. It is no secret that playing a 9am start vs VicAs was the least appealing game of the season.
While we always enjoy the commeraderie of the Bays-RC team !

As for next season? There will be club and team discussions over the coming weeks and months. Lakehill wishes to be present in all the LIWSA divisions next season (based on player demand). Our team has had a number of comings and goings over the last 4 years but our core has been solid and their wishes will be taken into the decision process!

As for Cup season, that's just whipping cream on the cake that has been the 2019/20 season!  Go out and enjoy the post-season games but don't be disappointed if the season ends in 4 weeks time! Gorge Masters will be the team to beat IMHO.

A new LIWSA season has begun!

A new season of LIWSA D3 soccer has begun and the Lakehill Stripes have regained their scoring touch with 9 different players having found the back of the net in the first two games this season while our keeper and defense have kept the goals against count to zero!

The season gets progressively tougher with game 3 being on Sept 27th vs newcomers Saanich Fusion. 8pm kick off at Braefoot Turf. The following Friday is a road trip to Ladysmith for what will be another defensively minded game!

2018/19 LIWSA Season Recap

We posted the Div3 standings HERE, today we look at some of the other 2018/19 LIWSA divisions.

The top tier (Premier) had four very competitive teams led by SFFC. At this tier most teams have former University calibre players on their starting XI rosters. Things change from year to year so it was nice to see SFFC climb from (near-)last to first. The PLSC team coached by SoccerWorlds JonL always does well. Lakehill EPIC broke into the top 2 with a very good year and played some lovely expansive football!

Div 1W:

Following a championship 2017/18 season in which Lakehill won provincials the team failed to launch as many players scattered to other teams (GorgeUtd). PLSC D1 and Gorge each won promotion to Premier which will help to have 7 teams in Premier next season! That also leaves a few promo spots into D1 from D2. The leagues aim is to have 10 teams in each division. But as Bays Prem discovered the calibre increment from D1 or D2 to Premier is significant!

Div 2:

Some teams are getting older and it shows as VWUtd struggled in D1 this year and last years promoted Cascades also were challenged to string some wins together  but with no relegations it will be a new season next year! There are some questions over who will go up into D1. Peninsula holds the promo spot but will they field a club branded team or will a challenger take the Div1 spot? Waiting in their wings to go to Div1 are Castaways and Gorge FC. PLSC D2 struggled to sty up in D2 this past season. While newcomers: SaltSpring and the previous promoted Fernwood teams both did well in D2. The Gorge Utd D2 was also a team made up of young newcomers  and should strengthen for the 2019/20 season.

In D3 there was one clear favorite all season, Nanaimo with what was a u19 team scored 50 goals and had the fewest goals against. They won the double with the league title and the Frank Leversedge Cup  we wish them well in D2. The D3 second place spot was earned by Gorge while 3 points back was Sooke. Finishing with 31 points on 17 games played was Lakehill D3 who had led the league at the winter break. The team will be back next season to try again at earning promo. Nanaimo will create a new D3 team. Not sure about the other teams just yet.

Meanwhile in Over30B : Castaways did well to get promoted. Lakehill D3 played four of the O30B teams this season and only let in one goal (to Lakehill O30B). Many of these teams may elect to go to the new O35 division next season.

2018/19 D3 Season Standings

Another season comes to a close and despite a strong start the team did not achieve its objective of finishing top 2. The games after Xmas were challenging and the results did not go as expected.

Overall the level of goaltending in Div3 was very very good this season (Bays#1, Gorge, Sooke, VW and of course our own #74 who led the league in goals against with only 8 against in league play and only 4 in playoffs.

Nanaimo will be going up to Div2 and likely so will Gorge (or Sooke). Nanaimo will be creating a new Div3 team for the 2019/20 season but we wont know what night their home games will be till the August schedule is released! Friday night home games will likely once again be the norm for Peninsula, Bays#1 and ourselves. While Sooke likes Saturday nights and PLSC, Ladysmith like their Sunday 10am slots and others prefer Sunday noon or 2pm. So expect fewer Friday night away games and more Sunday morning/afternoon games in the 2019/20 season!

Thanks to the club and our coaches for their support, the fact that we had such a large roster reaffirms that players want to play at Braefoot Park ! We say the departure of 6 players after the previous season and integrated 8 new players (never easy). We are hoping to once again retain the core and will pick up again in August with trials for 24 spots. Hoping to see some new and some former players out for that if you are interested drop us an email!

For next season we will retain our Friday night 8pm home game spot but expect to have to play a few more games on field 2 next season. Practices will still be Monday/Wednesday 7:45-9:10pm because Tuesday/Thursday is heavily used at the club. We don't know the fee structure yet but are trying to stay below $300/player (this past season was $285).

Who is in the LIWSA D3 league this season?

As of early July these 12 teams have been declared!

There could still be some change between now and start of play. The main impact would be that almost all "away" games would be on Sunday's this season so we need to plan accordingly!

We will continue to have our home games on Friday's at 8pm at Braefoot Park.

What you will notice is instead of travelling to Salt Spring this season we will have to go to Nanaimo (new in the league). Stay tuned as we will be starting kick around in early August!

For 90 minutes you played hard , often on the back heal to a very good SaltSpring team. Once you leveled it there was a hope we could get to a shoot out! But SSI scored in each of the extra times to end the game 3-1 winners! Time to rest up and start preparing for next season! See you in August!

Interesting observations:

 

Goalkeeping was better in 2016/17 - or - fewer goal scorers!

Goals scored in 2015/16 season: 301

Goals scored in 2016/17 season: 256

The division is missing a team from SFFC!

 

1) in year 1 because Fernwood was so dominant that directly skewed everyone else's results.

2) in year 1 Gorge was in last place with a -41 Goals Diff, this past season Gorges' GD was -2, the difference a solid keeper and better defense can make!

2) Saltspring slightly improved but should have gone to D2 in both seasons!

3) Castaways , while still near the bottom vastly improved over last season based on goals against!

4) while JDF merged their two teams into one they still under performed

5) Bays United definitely fell off form from last season while the teams around them basically stayed the same

6) Ladysmith with their defensive system also benefitted from a good sweeper and keeper

7) VicWest once again benefitted by being in the 'b' pool after round one and picked up points in round 2 to climb up the standings

8) VicAs and  PLSC basically same in both season

9) Lakehill scored less and conceded a few more. Something that needs to be corrected in year 3!

 

It's time for our annual LIWSA end of season review.... as we have done in 2016 and 2017 !

 

Starting with the top tier of LIWSA soccer: Premier! There where a few changes at Premier this season, gone was the VI Wave u18 team and new was the Campbell River team. Prospect Lake continued the form of the past few seasons but had a challenger for top spot from Lakehill! Lakehill was (for all intent) a rebranding of the Wave and Highlanders teams of the past few years mainly consisting of EPIC recruited talented players wearing the Lakehill badge!

 

Stellar inaugural season winning the league and the Terry Price Cup!

 

 

Div 1  once again say a very dominant season display by the Bays United team followed 3 wins back by the aging (but still very good!) VicWest FC team. The returning Lakehill Reds coached by Paul Rai had a very good season featuring a few new faces but a returning Kelsey and Kimmie that gave the team defensive strength and forward going abilities! Lakehill had an excellent post season run and won the Doug Day Trophy AND qualified for Provincial post season play! Well done! At the bottom of the table where the two JDF teams and just above them the Gorge team which improved over last year and features two former Lakehill youth players! Changes expected next season include the Bays United team moving up to Premier!

 

Which creates a promo spot from Div 2!

 

 

Div 2 has been a Lakehill v SFFC battle the last few years! This season saw a strong top 3 battle between those two and division winners Castaways! Surprisingly none of those teams won the Shergold Cup with Lakehill losing to Gorge in the Semi-final and SFFC losing in the Final! None of the top 3 are expected to accept promotion to Div1 because their clubs already occupy a spot there! Which under LIWSA bylaws would give Nanaimo the ability to promote to D1, we are not expecting anyone to be relegated from D1 but maybe JDF will merge their two teams into one strong team thereby freeing up a spot in D1?

 

 We'll have to wait and see.

 

 

Which brings us to Div 3 . This was the second season in D3 for our Lakehill team. The team went through some changes over the 2016/17 season with 5 departures and 7 new players joining. Yet due to player commitments it was often a challenge getting a good turn out. The Lakehill/Gorge u18s provided us with a few capable permit players when asked and we are thankful to them! We did have some new players join us that brought a lot of skill. Our two new players from the West Shore really helped make up for some defensive and midfield departures. We lost one Lakehill developed midfielder and picked up another to keep our claim of having more Lakehill developed youth playing on our team (than at any other club seniors team) intact! A big thanks to all! Especially our amazing goaltender. The standings show us slipping over all to 6th but in reality we tied for 4th and had we managed to get our make up game in we likely would have tied for 3rd this season! Not bad at all!

 

The highlight was our post season performance going 5W and 1L in Leversedge Cup play! The Loss was hard to accept but we have to acknowledge that Saltspring is a Div2 or even a Div1 calibre team and we are not there yet! Despite that you had some great results this season! One are for improvement (well a few actually) is we need to get a goal scorer for next season!  We scored half the goals of the top 2 teams! Defensively we did great but gave up one or two we'd like to pull back including a famous off the "off the butt" own goal!

One thing that we can all be proud of is that you always played positive football and not the defensive negative style that we say by the team that registered 9 draws in league play. How depressing was that to watch!

Maybe next season we will crack that nut and score a few more goals while staying strong in our end!

Off to the Finals!

What a post season! It all comes down to one game against a very good team!

In our second season playing www.liwsa.com seniors D3 the Lakehill Reds came up a bit short in our bid to earn promotion to D2 but have compensated with a stellar 5 game post season run in which they defeated D3 opponents: Sooke (2-0) &  Gorge (3-0) and Peninsula O30B (7-0) to qualify for the quarter finals vs Gorge, in what was a tight game which the Lakehill D3s won 1-0, placing them into the Leversedge Semifinals vs VicWestScottish of the O30B league. The Scottish are a very good team made up of a number of former VicWest D1 players and probably the best goalkeeper we had come up against. Scottish went their entire season never giving up more than 1 goal against per game! Lakehill fell behind early on a defensive error but leveled before showing a dominant display in the second half ending in a 4-1 Victory for Lakehill sending them to the March 25th Cup Final at Lochside Turf.

It won't be an easy game as the Saltspring team is very experienced and has won every game in post season after finishing regular season in 2nd place behind Peninsula D3. Saltspring will be favoured to win the Trophy. Win or Lose its been a great season for Lakehill D3 who will look to add some players in the summer months! .Interested? contact us

Cup Play

The Lakehill D3Ws are on a bit of a slump of late having most recently lost 0-2 to PLSC on Dec 10th and previously 0-2 to the LIWSA Div3 division leaders Peninsula on Nov 24th. Play has been good for vast stretches of their games but breaking down stubborn defences has proven to be a challenge! Next up ..Sooke (H),  SaltSpring (A), Gorge(H), Castaways(H) and Ladysmith(A) to see out the 2017/18 D3 season.

 The team is still chasing a 3rd place finish (but it is very tight in the middle of the pack) as Peninsula has all but locked up promo to D2 in 2018 while SaltSpring is sitting comfortably in the 2nd promo spot (like last season).

The LIWSA Frank Leversedge Cup sees the D3s playing three qualifying round games starting in mid February thru then single elimination cup into late March:

• Sooke D3 (home) (2-0 win)
• Gorge D3 (away) (3-0 win)
• Peninsula O30B #1 (home) (7-0 win)
• Gorge D3 (home) (1-0 win)
• VicWest O30B (home) (4-1 win)

dropped some points

A lovely sunny weekend was had by all our D3 players as the team enjoyed their annual resort get away on SaltSpring island! Unfortuntely the reds fell to a solid opponent.

That's three halves (over 6 vs SSI) where we dropped two goals! During our last 45 minutes our players contained their opponent. The reds actually scored a goal, but apparently when an opponent and their own keeper come into contact and the ball drops that's deemed to be an infraction against the team who doesn't interfere with play. It happens. That being said, it was the teams first loss in 8 games.

It doesn't get any easier with the next game being Friday Nov 3rd against the only undefeated team in the league: Peninsula. The winner of that game will have a huge impact on how the season standings will end. Hope the stripes come to play!
